Augusta from Atlanta-Which is better Evans or West Augusta (Martinez: work, medical)

Which is better of the two and nicer place to live. Which area is bigger of the two. And which one has the most resturants and retail close by.
I'm moving to augusta from atlanta very soon. I would like to live in the better of the four areas. Alexander rd, jimmie dyess pkwy/belair rd in west augusta. And Hardy macmanus, and off north belair rd in evans.

I think Evans and West Augusta pretty much run into each other. The population of West Augusta alone is about 40,000, while Evans has a population of about 20,000. West Augusta has alot more restaurants and retail than Evans, but Evans has a pretty sizable amount of retail for a city its size. I wold also recommend looking inot homes along Furys Ferry Road. I live near Alexander Dr. It's very convenient to down town which is good if you're working there or at the medical college. That would save you lots of time and gas during the week days. There's a good number of restaurants down town and many on Washington Road (many chains but some unique ones like Reinhart's).

Personally I haven't explored the Evans side as much because I'm not a fan of the traffic over there. But you're probably use to that in Atlanta. There are restaurants and retail in that direction too. Jimmie Dyess will probably have you closest to the mall.

Despite what someone who will probably chime in here soon will tell you just before he slams Augusta, Evans/Martinez/Augusta are essentially one big urban area now and knitting tighter and tighter all the time as growth fills in the gaps. The Evans area is just a little farther drive from downtown and is becoming city-ish (it's not actually an incorporated city, nor is Martinez, but they're both acting a lot like nice suburbs of Augusta).

Of those areas, probably Hardy McManus. Fury's Ferry, which Hardy McManus comes off of, has quite a few nice shops and nice areas and is relatively close to downtown...lots of fancy housing areas and that seems to be where growth is headed at the moment.

Alexander Road, if it's the one I'm thinking of, is just off Washington-lots and lots of shopping and close to downtown as previously stated, but not a poster child for Augusta...although most convenient to everything, especially downtown.

North Belair, a little more remote and you'll probably stick to Evans area for shopping/dining. That area is definitely coming along but certainly has fewer choices than West Augusta-although really anyplace in Augusta proper is a very easy drive from Evans.

Jimmie Dyess/Belair isn't near really very much but Fort Gordon, and you'd be closer to the Evans area and get a better location by being off North Belair Road in Evans.

The big question you have to ask yourself is " do I have or plan to have school aged children?" if the answer is yes.. then you will want to live in Columbia County, preferably the Evans area. As someone said earlier... subdivisions around Hardy McManus Rd and Fury's Ferry will be very reminiscent of suburbs in north Atlanta.. the only downside is that they are part of the Augusta metro area. But you can squint your eyes a bit and maybe pinch your nose ( Augusta air is very smelly) and you can almost imagine you are in east cobb.

The alexander road area has alot of nice subdivisions and neighborhoods. Close to the washington road hustle, bustle, and traffic.

Both the Evans and West Augusta area are booming with growth. But west augusta is alot bigger than evans so it would offer more.

Are you sure about that population. Columbia county had 110,000 people according to the census in 2007.
Harlem 3,000
Appling 1,000
Grovetown 10,000.
That would leave evans and martinez with over 90,000. Maybe since west augusta is only 40,000. The people who stay in the martinez part of west augusta. In area code 30907 help make up that 90 plus.

I moved here from florida to the evans area. Everybody hear loves everything about the area. There are several store's and resturant's in a 10 min vincinity.
