Default Columbia County

One thing you need to be aware of is that your children will go to the school that they are zoned for depending on your house location. Yes, Davison is one of the top schools in the state, however, you can't just send your children there. The child has to be accepted based on a number of criteria.

Martinez, (like someone said - it is pronounced Martin-ezzz) which is west of Augusta, is one of the top 100 cities in Georgia. It is in Columbia Country and the schools there are much better than those in Richmond Country. New homes are going up all the time but the crime rate has gone down. Evans is a town in Columbia Country as is Grovetown. Nice areas. Grovetown, as someone mentioned, is high military. Evans is high physician, engineers, contractors, etc.

Thompson is 30 minutes away from Augusta and is a nice area. North Augusta is in South Carolina, just across the river from Augusta and is a nice area too.

Say what you will, crime is very high in Augusta, especially the South Augusta area. The type of crime that involves shootins, stabbings and murders on a daily basis. Crime in Martinez, Evans and the other areas mentioned consists mainly of the occasional robbery, mostly shoplifting or white collar crime - embezzelments that kind of thing.

We lived in Augusta for 18 years and have lived in Martinez for the last 22 years. Our older child went to private school his whole life. Although we lived right across the street from a school, had he been in public school, he would never have gone to that school. He would have been bused an hour away each year. Our younger child went to public school in Columbia County. Of the two, the younger chld got the better education.

The nice thing is, all of the outlying towns are close enough so that you can live outside Augusta and still work in the city if desired, for instance at one of the downtown hospitals. There is plenty of any type entertainment from symphonies, to minor league baseball and everything in between. Plus Atlanta is 2 hours away and the beach and/or mountains, not more than 4.

Anyone know the status of Ft Gordon as far as base closures go? I know without Gordon and the military members, the Augusta economy will take a beating.

Ft Gordon isn't going anywhere! In fact they are building a slew of new military housing. And they are expanding it as well in other areas.

How are the schools rated in Martinez and Evans? We will be moving this Spring. I can't wait. I'm moving from Huntsville,Al (Thank heavens). The Feds have just cut all education money off for the state. Kids were not making the grade, so they lowerd the passing grade to 60. Good timing for the new job. What about private schools are the public schools better? And I was wondering if I should make a trip. I'm a little worried after living in Al. Thanks for any info. good or bad.

I've been to Huntsville and to tell you the truth, Augusta is very similar.. but I really didn't see what was wrong with Huntsville, maybe its the part of town you are in? There is a huge difference from West Augusta and Columbia County from South Augusta. If my perception of Augusta was based solely on South Augusta.. I would probably hate it here... but really the only time I ever have to venture south of Gordon Hwy (which is considered the main dividing line between South Augusta and West Augusta) is the rare chance when I fly out of the Augusta airport or take a drive to Savannah...there is really not much of a reason to go to that part of town. West Augusta and Martinez/Evans is completely different. Lots of new development, a variety of restaurants and shopping and entertainment. Now Augusta is not as urban or diverse as Seattle.. it's a much smaller city, so you can't expect it to be like Seattle, but if you stick to the westside of town you should enjoy it here. the cost of living is extremely reasonable. Your money will stretch far here.

Default Renting

While looking for a house. I would like to rent. This would give me a chance to get to know the area. Are there any rent houses on a short term, maybe 6months or less? I have 2 standard poodles. Looking in the Evans area. Also I have looked on line for a house. In a house I'm looking for a 1 story on a half acre, flat area, no woods, would like a pool. Most of the homes look like 2 story. Thanks for your help.

maybe you could find something in one of the older subdivisions in Evans or Martinez.. I'd suggest consulting an agent who has worked in that area for a long time.

I need some help please! I currently live in Richmond County and have two children with Special Needs. I couldn't take the school system so I removed my kids to HomeScool. I am hoping to move to Barrow County Georgia. I heard they have a great school system for kids with disabilities but one African American family disagreed. Looking for some in-sight...

Drama.. you may want to post in the general georgia, you may get more responses to this question as Barrow County isn't really that close to Augusta. It's between Athens and Atlanta.I do know though that Gwinnett County School System has good programs for kids with special needs. Barrow County is just next door to Gwinnett County, btw.
