Grovetown vs Thomson
Grovetown is a wonderful area to. Do not knock the amount of military that live there because without there presence the economy would suffer, in the Augusta area. The schools are not ranked the best for Columbia County but they are far from bad schools. If you look on greatschools.net and the GA school site you will see they are still average schools. There is also a new HS going up for 2009.

The schools rank the lowest in Columbia County as well. There are a bunch of new developements being thrown up, but all the homes are literally piled on top of each other and are pretty much spec homes. Chamblin Rd has a lot of new developments being built, but why would you want to be right on top of the closed landfill? and polluted Euchee Creek YUCK!
I say find you a nice piece of land or large lot in McDuffie county and get a reputable builder to build you a nice home. The drive isn't so bad actually if you stay in the area closest to Washington Rd/1-20- Stagecoach Rd area or going towards Willkes county (Washington, GA) There were some very nice new houses on a side road(sorry can't remember the name of it) close to Belle Meade subdivsion which is a very nice older, established subdivision.
As far as things to do, you will most likely have to come to Augusta. Martinez/Evans for all that. Thomson's biggest store is the Super Wal-mart! for now at least.
You can also check out homes in the MLS by going to Main

Both Thomson and Grovetown would be good choices. Overall Thomson IMO.

safety, stuff to do, schools, commute time, & raising small children.
Safety-both pretty good. Edge to Thomson, I think.
Stuff to do-Well, IN the town, Thomson, but NEAR the town, Grovetown hands down. Neither has a lot locally in their municipality and Thomson is simply not that near anything, while Grovetown is an easy drive to Augusta, which is really turning into a neat city lately.
Commute time-Grovetown. Not even a contest here.
Raising small children-Thomson (in my opinion).
If you can see yourself doing it, I'd consider one of the subdivisions near what's called Roper's Crossing, about 4 miles north of Grovetown (Euchee Creek, Tudor Branch, River Birch Landing, Country Place, etc.-there's like 10 or 15 of these things).
They are mostly in a different school's catchment area than Grovetown but are all within 4-5 miles of both Grovetown and Evans. Evans is turning into a really nice area (it's an unincorporated town which is acting just like an incorporated town lately-has the County Library and most County offices, big Sheriff station, post office, good shopping, some industry in the area, nice churches, etc).
My wife is originally from Richmond and we have really liked it here. In many ways Augusta reminds me of a smaller Richmond from a couple of decades ago before Richmond blew up with growth.

As far as the city limits go. Thomson has the edge over Grovetown. Grovetown is closer to Augusta on the other hand. 10 to 15 minutes. Thomson 30 mins to Augusta and a hour to Dekalb county.

I live in Thomson, I like it. The school system leaves a lot to be desired though. I commute to Augusta every day for work, the drive is not bad at all.
