The new mayor pro-term is Alvin Mason. What do you guys know about him? Is that a good thing or bad thing for Augusta?

The whole idea of the mayor pro tem is racially motivated and needs to be done away with. From what I have read and seen in the local news,,, there is an unwritten agreement that if the mayor is white, the mayor pro tem has to be black (which Mason is). This is ridiculous. Augusta is 55% majority black and Deke Copenhave won the last election with 60% of the vote, so apparantly a lof of black people thought he would make a good mayor, despite that he is white. All of this racial tit for tat in Augusta needs to be abolished if Augusta is ever going to move past its legacy of racial divisiveness.
As far as I know, Mason is a good man, but he just got on the commission, and you have others who have been on much longer who have never been mayor pro tem.

I think its a great thing that Mason got elected. But lol I think Augusta(city) black population is more like 49-50% not 55% which is way too high. If you include some of the towns in south richmond county. Like Hephzibah and Blythe which are both 70% white then the black population would go down to more like 46%.

the latest census showed Augusta's population to be 55% black and its a trend that is increasing...by 2015 Augusta will be 60% black.. not that this is a bad thing (Atlanta has about the same demographic breakdown).. that's just what the trend is.
