The city itself and the state would not let the city annex that much land.

Columbia county is a fast growing county because of land. Once that land is gone in the next 2 year's. Columbia county will continue to sprawl into Lincoln, Wilkes, and Mcduffie county. Wilkes is halfway between Augusta and Atlanta. I don't never expect the two cities to combine. But I do expect to see continuous development on I-20 btw Atlanta and Augusta. If New York can be built up all the way to New Jersey. Why do some of yall think its impossible for Atlanta to be built up all the way to Augusta. Atlanta has only 5 million people compare to New york 11 or 12 mill. I definitely don't think as Atlanta continues to grow. That all the new residents will live in the city center over the suburbs.

This isn't New York, and several people have chimed in saying it won't happen.
Anyone that would commute DAILY from Augusta to Atlanta must have a screw loose! That is just nuts. There are too many other options to put up with that waste of time and resources.
I get the feeling you WANT the two metro's to sprawl together. There is NO need for that type of paper-thin density to gobble up the countryside up and down the I-20 corridor.
Again, not in any of our lifetimes.

You can see several developments and construction going on. Places between Atlanta and Augusta that were rural like Madison-Morgan, Greensboro-Greene, Eatonton-Putnam, & Watkinsville-Oconee are not anymore.
A inner county Columbia and a inner county Dekalb are only 1hr and 20 minutes apart. That's a normal commute or less for some ppl in Atlanta.
How long before Atlanta reaches Augusta?
2,3,5 year's?

It will never reach Augusta. That is 120+ miles. No way in my lifetime. Atlanta will reach macon, Columbus, and Chattanooga way before Augusta. Once you are west of Conyers there isn't anything for miles and miles.

I would argue that there is a fast approaching limit to how much more Atlanta can grow, due to water issues. Atlanta has 5 million people, and I personally don't think it has the water supply for 8.

Yeash, just because it might grow to Augusta doesn't actually make Atlanta closer... or at least the good parts.
The sprawl has been caused by Georgia actually adding incentives for companies to settle in different parts of Georgia, but what happens is they just settle right outside Atlanta creating more sprawl.
I Think Columbia county is start to settle out. Most people live there because of the schools. I don't know anybody who moved out there without kids who really likes it.

Nature and trees is boring?
There are some people like myself who think endless sub-divisions and strip malls are boring.

sprawl is generally low density, often unplanned and uncontrolled suburban development on the fringe of an urban area. See Columbia County.
