The biggest difference will be cost of living.. housing in Augusta is going to be much more affordable. Augusta has some of the cheapest housing of any metro area in the country. As far as groceries, entertainment, restaurants, etc... those things will cost about the same. The other major difference is traffic. Augusta has far less traffic congestion than Atlanta. We do have our trouble spots.. but nothing like the creep and crawl on the downtown connector or the top end of the perimeter. Now Augusta is a much smaller city in Atlanta so entertainment, dining, and shopping options are going to be much more limited, but then Atlanta is only a 2.5 hr drive away.

My neighbors from Gwinnett love Augusta. They have been living here for a year now.

I currently reside in Gwinnett County and would like to move. We are exploring some options and Augusta has come to our attention. We are looking for a smaller city than Atlanta, no huge drug cartels in a 10 mile radius of our home, great schools for our two boys (6 & 8), basically a good place to raise a family! What areas should we explore?
judgeme: more details about your neighbors would be great!

Augusta is a good bet! As far a raising a family it is more of places you should watch out of then places to look for. Augusta is general is pretty solid with a few rough spots downtown, South Augusta, and a few more. Columbia Co. schools are generally better, but there are also private schools in Richmond county... which would you be interested in?

Martinez consisted of a bunch of residental neighborhoods. Some great neighborhoods in there, but it depends on your price range.
Evans has shopping, commercial, as well as residential.
Those are the two you would most likely be picking from in Columbia Co... the rest are a bit far unless you do not mind a drive.

They are a married couple in their early thirties from Dacula. My son is going to attend the new Pine Hill. Middle school that's opening the upcoming school year. I live in Hephzibah in richmond county. Hephzibah elementary schools are good. West Augusta and Martinez are other options for elementary.
