We are PCSing to FT Gordon end of April, i am going to rent a house in Harlem, right by the Harlem City Park..Does anyone have any views on the area? Is it safe?..I have 2 kids, so i want to make sure it is a good area.

We are PCSing also. I spoke with a realtor today about Harlem. She stated its kinda rural...u will need to drive for shopping, etc. I have a teenager and from the websites on schools Harlem HS is not the best.
Good luck on ur search! Its great u can rent and see before buying.

The area by the park in Harlem is safe, but one side of the park is better than the other. If it is on the same side of the park as the cemetary, that is the least desirable side, but not unsafe.
It all depends on what you want but Harlem is a small town and the closest shopping is 15 miles away. There is a small grocery store in town and a couple of gas stations. There is also a Huddle House and a small restaurant or two in town, and a Regions bank.
If you like small town living, it's perfect. And an easy drive to Fort Gordon.
Harlem schools are decent also. Maybe not "the best" but not the worst, by far.

We live near Harlem its a nice small town. My daughter graduated from the high school in harlem. Its kind of far from shopping. I would like to suggest Grovetown. We live there and its nice. Its bigger than Halem but still a small town atmosphere. They have a brand neew high school opening this year and also a walmart opening this fall on the edge of town. We live in Summerfield subdivision and there are currently about four houses on our block alone for rent. I hope this helps ...we are on our way to Fort HOod this Sept.

With Lewiston Road the up and coming shopping area, In another year or two this area will build up like the Evans area.

Grovetown is the better choice, IMO. It is much closer to Forth Gordon, has more newer subdivisions to choose from, is closer to I20 and Augusta and restaurants and shopping. Harlem is much more rural and a bit isolated. If you prefer to be out a ways and have more land and like a c ountry lifestyle, then you may prefer Harlem.

Grovetown wins over Harlem almost everytime. Lewiston road is becoming Grovetown's main area.
