Augusta (and areas) economy is and always has been based largely on gov't jobs ($$); Fort Gordon, SRS, MCG, VA, so impact is less harsh. Private business feed off these gov't committments additionally.

When the National Security Agency is completed in 2010. You can add those 4,000 jobs. To the list of govt jobs in Augusta.
Metro Augusta unemployment dropped to 8.5%
Below the state average of 9.3% and the national avg of 8.9%

The $100 million Kroc Center is one of my favorite projects. The benefit to the community will be tremendous.

We know that the VAR is put on hold and may not be built anytime soon. Until you started posting, I didn't know Greenville even existed-ok I lied-I heard about it having a million murders. Since you like to talk trash, how about you focus on Bi-Lo. Didn't they sponsor your arena-that's right- I hope your city got all the money from the naming rights. If not-oh well. Maybe Yanni will come back, maybe not.

Augusta has been losing jobs too along with every metro area in the country. Duh. So, highrises getting built isn't considered booming? I guess that means Dubai isn't booming either. Oh and Bilo filed for bankruptcy protection. Do you know why they did? Probably not. Didn't research it did you? All of their stores are still open. They are doing fine. They're not going anywhere. Speaking of arenas, let me know when you guys get a real one like we have. Oh and let me know when your CarMax opens.

When did it become a race? Or for that matter, a debate?
Two cities can't both be great places to live?

Well, in a debate on points, Greenville wins
With one small problem for me: I don't want to live Greenville. I want to live in Augusta, and I like the area Augusta is in better. Apparently a few hundred thousand folks agree with me.

I agree with the mayor. Riding through Augusta at this present time. Is the same as riding through a big construction zone. Huge projects going up in the city.

Be that as it may it is still behind its peers. Its doing stuff these other cities already have. Sorry but its the truth.

If Augusta's neighbors are Wrens, Waynesboro, Beech Island, Millen, and Lincolnton.. then I suppose it is doing better and is booming, but as moton pointed out it is behind its peers like Columbia, Greenville, Charleston, and Savannah. Augusta is probably ahead of Macon though.
