But how about this Morris guy? He seem to have a monopoly on riverfront in downtown. I dont know why the TEE Center has to be attached to his operation. What do the blacks want? what do the whites want?

This artcile pretty much sums the whole thing up. You must be fairly new to Augusta, because this is all old news.

But Grantham was the architect of the whole thing.. and he royally screwed it up. First by lowballing the true cost of TEE to voters, then by making a backroom deal with Billy Morris to insure Morris got the no-bid contract to run it with a taxpayer subsidy and have it attached to his hotel, giving him a virtual monopoly on convention business. Then Grantham made another secret deal with Betty Beard tying the TEE center to Laney-Walker neighborhood revitalization for her vote to give Grantham's buddy Morris the contract to operate it. Read the metro spirit article, it's all spelled out. But once costs for TEE dramatically jumped from $20 mill to now close to $70 mill (incl a parking deck), Beard voted against the new TEE proposal saying it was too expensive. Now Grantham says Beard broke their deal. Well it goes on and on.. unfortunately this is the ugliness of Augusta politics. It was taken off the agenda because they did not have the votes to pass the agreement on TEE.. the Hyatt cancellation threat by Osbon was a bluff, and it didn't work. Now he says he will extend the constract to the end of September. Don't forget that Osbon is part of the same club with Billy Morris and Don Grantham... it's all one big cabal.. it's all about power and running everything in Augusta.

The blacks never wanted Morris to get the TEE in the first place. They are not against the TEE, but are essentially against the way Morris was awarded the contract in a backroom deal with Grantham and others. The delay occurred in the first place because Grantham and some others were intent on awarding it to Morris.. they could have built this thing next to the common or somewhere else downtown within walking distance of all the hotels and restaurants and shops.. but noooo it had to go to Morris. Grantham was able to get it for Morris by essentially bribing Betty Beard for her vote by promising her money for Laney Walker revitalization. Really this should go back to the voters for reconsideration. But if you really want to blame anyone, blame Grantham if this thing goes under. I'm not at all comfortable with this arrangement with Morris. I think its better to do this opver and do it right.

The all want the same thing, a better Augusta.

This is why the library, judicial center, MCG dorms, MCG $500 million investment in Gilbert manor, Underwoods homes demolishing and building a new residentail in its place, etc is happening downtown.

The problem is tying TEE to Morris. The Black Community has a lot of mistrust about Morris and for good reason. If Morris was taken out of the equation, the TEE would be passed tomorrow.

well half of the commission seats are up for election this fall. If we could get some new people in there who are not a part of the good ole boy alliances then things could hopefully move forward.

Well it looks like he may be running again. Qualifying starts on Aug 31st... so we will know then if there are any challengers to the status quo.
