There are good parts and bad parts to both cities. But in they are comparable. This being the Augusta forum, we will probably tell you that Augusta is way better.

You'll probably also hear a lot more about Greenville than you expected to on an Augusta forum. I'm just saying...

very similar cities, with Columbia being a bit bigger. Both have large lakes nearby. Columbia has a large University (University of SC), so it does have a bit more of a college town vibe. Augusta has ASU, a smaller regional university and MCG (medical College of GA) and Paine College a small predominately black liberal arts school. Downtown Columbia is a bit more developed and active, but downtown Augusta is making alot of progress. Columbia is going to be better if you are into college football (SEC) and they have a rather large arena (Colonial Center). Augusta has a smaller civic arena, but it appears they are doing a better job now bringing in some shows. Augusta has a minor league baseball team (Greenjackets). I'd say dining and shopping options are pretty similar, Maybe Columbia has slightly more, but I didn't notice it was significantly better. Both have nice and not so nice areas. Columbia will put you a little closer to the beach... like Myrtle Beach and Charleston.

Slightly bigger than Augusta. Riding down I-20 in both cities feel about the same. Augusta is going through a growth spurt at the moment.

I grew up in Augusta and still have a bunch of family there but I now live in Columbia. Somebody might correct me but I can't think of a thing other than minor league baseball that Augusta has that Columbia doesn't and a bunch the other way around. I think someone could be very happy in either location.

I don't think you have been to Augusta lately. There are plenty of stores/restaurants in Augusta not in Columbia. Apple, Pf Changs, Chop House, etc.
I agree that someone could be very happy in either location.

A Imax 3D theatre is located in Augusta, but not in Columbia. The nearest Imax 3D stadium to Columbia is Augusta then Charleston.
