Master plan work displaces Paine College Lions

The new $14 million Health and Learning (HEAL) Complex is set to replace the old Carter Gym. The college has already tackled a major renovation of the administration building along 15th Street.

The city is also looking to spend $370,000 to begin designing pedestrian improvements for the stretch. "I think we need to give it a face-lift," said Steve Cassell with the engineering department. "The road was built to move a lot of cars. We have got to get more into moving people...whether it be bike lanes or raised medians." Paine College administrators also want to close portions of Druid Park Avenue.

On a side note.... The college will also break ground on two new dormitories....

Default Gentrification in the inner city continues!

New homes rejuvenate older areas | The Augusta Chronicle
Three new cottage-style homes on Pine Street near Laney-Walker Boulevard startlingly contradict the neighborhood, where a quarter of buildings are abandoned and more than half are neglected.

The progress seems only a trickle. Soon it might become a flood. After three years of quiet planning and property acquisition, construction in Laney-Walker and Bethlehem is now poised to take off.

Three more homes are being built on Pine Street and 22 more are planned. At another site -- Holley Street, just off R.A. Dent Boulevard -- new homes also have appeared. By the end of the year, construction will be under way at five sites, said Chester Wheeler, the director of Augusta's Housing and Community Development Department. The city agency serves as the master developer for revitalization of the two neighborhoods.

Groceries & More is opening in the White's condo building on Broad street in the Artist Row area. The business is located next to Casa Blanca Cafe and they're applying for a alochol license... I suspect this has to do with Lennar Corp annoucing their plans to finish the 34 remaining condos in the building...

On a side note... I'm wondering what's coming to the building next to Davids Mens Wear and the Whites building.. I saw workers renovating the exterior and the interior of the building today...

Redevelopment agency approves budget | The Augusta Chronicle

The agency charged with overseeing spending for redevelopment of Augusta's Laney Walker and Bethlehem neighborhoods signed off on a revised $7.83 million budget for the start of the project Wednesday. The funds come from some $8 million in bonds issued in advance of receipt of an estimated $37.5 million in hotel-motel room fees going into the project over 50 years.
