Big changes coming to Fort Discovery property

Trotter says they're actively seeking tenants for the building, which could mean up to 500 new jobs in downtown Augusta. And, since the property is right on the river, the updates will hopefully bring new life to the area. "I see as early as the end of this year, new life in this building," he said.

Have the sketches of the color scheme/interior been released that the story is referring to? This company only bought the former Fort Discovery area and not the entire building, correct?

I guess what I'm hoping, is that the exterior isn't pink anymore...

Art Meets Fashion comes to Augusta on Sunday

The Art Meets Fashion Ex’po’s[’e] IV Spring Fashion Extravaganza is bringing the world of fashion to Augusta on Sunday. The runway-inspired fashion experience at Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center will feature local and national fashion designers, boutiques, live music, and visual and performance artists. This is the first stop on a multi-city tour that includes Atlanta, Savannah, Ga., Birmingham, Ala., Charlotte, N.C., and Columbia, said local organizer Oscar Jessie, of GreenSpace International Group. “There hasn’t been a fashion presence in the Augusta community for some years now. I just wanted to revive that,” Jessie said. More than 40 runway models will wear spring fashions from local boutiques, regional designers and national department stores.

Community meeting for potential Artspace project in Augusta scheduled for April 25

A nonprofit real estate developer will hold a community meeting Wednesday to explore Augusta as a site for affordable home and work space for artists. The meeting will be part of a two-day preliminary feasability study for Artspace, a real estate developer specializing in local arts communities. It will be held at the downtown library’s first-floor meeting room at 7 p.m.

Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver first heard of Artspace last year at the Mayor’s Institute on City Design. He said that while Augusta has not seemed to price artists of the market yet, by developing an Artspace building Augusta could become a destination for artists. Augusta would be the first Artspace project in the Southeast.

County, city leaders come together for State of the Region

"We try to really bring the regions together to try and share one story with one voice," said Frank Spears, chairman of the Board for Leadership of Augusta.

Economic growth and job creation were both hot topics in the wake of announcements like the $172 million Starbucks production facility and the ribbon cutting of the new $286 million NSA building, just to name a few.

Preservationists and Davidson alumni renew efforts to save school building | The Augusta Chronicle

On Wednesday, a non-profit Minneapolis-based group called Artspace visited the old Davidson school as part of a two-day trip to area. At the request of the city, Artspace is studying the feasibility of developing affordable living and work space for artists.

Wendy Holmes, Artspace senior vice president for consulting and strategic partnerships, said school buildings like Davidson convert easily into living spaces. Of Artspace’s 30 projects, five are former school buildings.
