New park could be on the way for North Augusta

NORTH AUGUSTA,S.C. -- The North Augusta City Council is meeting Monday night -- and a new park could be on the horizon.

The city is looking to enter into an agreement with the North Augusta Riverfront Company to bring more business to Hammond's Ferry.

The city plans to build the park and a new road along the Savannah River. In return, the company will construct 20,000 square feet of retail space.

This is a five-year agreement, but construction could begin early next year.

Site preparation is under way off Evans to Locks Road for an assisted living facility on commercial property once earmarked for a major shopping center. The 7.99-acre parcel adjacent to Jones Landing Court is part of a larger tract owned by John Kenneth Davidson Sr., of Round Rock, Texas, who successfully rezoned the site from neighborhood commercial to a “special” category that allows assisted living projects. During the October 2011 hearing for that rezoning, the assisted living facility was described as a two-story, 65,000-square-foot project that would include 75 living units. Davidson was represented at the proceedings by William A. Trotter III, according to county records. The larger parcel, totaling 19 acres with frontage on both Furys Ferry and Evans to Locks roads, was zoned for commercial use in 1997. The owner filed a request in 2008 to rezone the property for a larger planned use development, but later withdrew the request. Construction is estimated to take about a year.
