Can anyone suggest fireworks or other 4th of July activities in Austin?

Hyde Park Church up north off of Duval has had fireworks in the past, far fewer crowds than Town Lake (which I've heard only horror stories about since I've moved here, great show, horrendous traffic).

IIRC, The Domain had fireworks last 4th as well.

I think there are a couple of other smaller places that do fireworks.

If you do want to see the one downtown, you might want to consider watching it from other vantage points. You used to be able to see it pretty well from the parking lot at Barton Creek Mall, though I don't know if they still allow folks to park there. There are other random spots along 360 that you can see them as well.

Find a friend with a balcony in one of the new high rises downtown - failing that - the top of the parking garage at the back of the Book People/ Anthropology/ previous Whole Foods has a great view of the fireworks on Town/Lady Bird lake. That's where I used to go and it was surprisingly unpoliced, if very unairconditioned!

I took a tour of the Austonian last night. I think the 56th floor viewing area would be pretty nice . Now, if I can just get an invite.
