What is the approximate cost to remove an inground pool? Who is the appropriate type of contractor for such a job? The yard appears to be more or less normal (ie no slope) but there is very limited access around the side yards so it may be difficult to get heavy equipment back there.

I honestly have never heard of anyone "removing" an inground pool, but I've heard of people filling them in. That would probably be the more cost effective way of doing it, especially when you'll have to fill in the hole you create anyway.

Search this site. I asked the same question about a year ago. Machine access is a consideration.

Thanks Exiled, I found your thread from last year. Can anyone else give me local, relevant information about removing an inground pool?

Jason Hinderer, Austin Eco Excavation 769-1400 specializes in doing this kind of site work. He has done a couple of jobs for me, is reasonably priced, does good work and is a pleasure to work with.

I wonder how hard it would be to turn part on an inground pool into a tornado shelter?

I know that it is really expensive to build in-ground pools, but I guess they can decrease the value of the property (unless the right buyer is found).

I know I looked at this awesome house, awesome yard, had a nice pool, backed up to a little forested area.
It was not the cost of the property that concerned me, but the ongoing costs associated with it (extra insurance cost, maintenance, taxes).

So I understand why someone would want to remove a pool.

My mother looked into this and just had fill dirt brought in and filled it up. She figures when she sells her house that the new owner can remove the dirt if they want to have a pool.

A tornado shelter? What an interesting idea. I like it. I wonder if the structure or finish of the pool would be damaged by leaving it empty for an extended period?

I'm going a bit off topic here, but the reasons I don't want a pool are.... time and cost of maintenance, danger to kids (including my own), liability, resource usage, and the desire to have a usable backyard. The property of interest is about a ten minute walk from a beautiful natural spring fed pool so there would still be easy access to summer splashing around even if the pool was removed.
