Default Living in Austin and commuting to work in outlaying towns?

I am in my mid-20s, and may accept a job offer East of Austin (Bastrop/Smithville area). How bad is the commute from downtown/SE Austin neighborhoods to that area?

I saw your earlier post. I'd pick Bastrop, as you mentioned. I think people commute that direction, but I'm not familiar with it personally, so I can't give you any details.

Are there any good neighborhoods for renters in the area around the airport and near 71? Or is that area largely too dangerous for a single female?

There are no areas around the Airport or most of East Austin that I would recommend to any single female relatives of mine.

My gut feeling is if you are going to live that close in, you'd be safer in central Austin or the South Congress area where there are more people around.

Commuting from Austin to Bastrop shouldn't be to bad, other then its distance, as traffic is usually flowing the opposite direction during peak commute times.

Still, I'd consider living around Bastrop and commuting into Austin for recreation.

I agree with CptRn. Not a great area...why not move to the Bastrop area? Cheaper rent and closer to wk....

I agree with the others: live in Bastrop and go into Austin on the weekends. Bastrop has a nice state park and a charming downtown. Lot of growth forecast for the area around Cedar Creek too.

I commuted to Elgin (near Bastrop) in my 20s. I wouldn't recommend a young single woman living in Bastrop, unless you're specifically looking for quaint country living, and by all means, Bastrop would be a great place for that. The commute was against traffic. Thirty or forty minutes to Bastrop seems like a small price to pay to enjoy what Austin has to offer. Anywhere with easy access to Ben White/71 west of 35 would probably be your best bet.
