My friend and I who are in our late 20s are going to Austin in the end of August for about 2 days (really 1 full day and 2 half days). We were wondering what are the best things to see in that short of a time? We know about 6th Street but is that too crazy full of college kids? What else is there to do downtown? And not downtown? Any help is appreciated. Thanks! (Btw, I'll be comparing Austin to Dallas, as I'll be in Dallas for a couple of days after this trip)!

There is also the Hot Sauce Festival on Aug 29th, if you are here. The problem with this festival is that it is free (with a can donation) to enter, and the crowds are usually huge because of this. So you get LONG lines at the tasting booths, and with the heat... it's just torture. I'm not even sure why I recommend it... but here you go:

Best thing to do is get a mix of what is close to downtown (DT itself/SoCo/Zilker/Ladybird Lake/Barton Springs Pools/Central Neighborhoods), combined with a drive to the west side of town to see the lakes/Oasis/etc. Remember it will be hot! But the evenings should be good.

It will be really really hot. I recommend 4th street for night life, it is the 20-30 something professional crowd.
During the day, swim in barton springs pool or head out to lake travis and rent a boat. You should eat at iguana grill if you want to eat out by the lake. They have good seafood enchiladas.
Hula hut is on lake austin and is always jam packed. We get their thai chicken/beef fajitas.
Other good food is eddie V's happy hour downtown - most seafood appetizers are 50% off.
