Not too crazy about Austin

Me! I moved from Michigan to a city just outside of Austin called Round Rock and it has been bittersweet. There are little to no museums and few things to do unless you want to go to an area called "6th Street" or Travis Lake, where there is a beach like area; boating;live music, prostitutes, drunkards, huge amounts of college kids out to have a "good time", etc. all mixed into one. I thought I would enjoy the botanical gardens but ....Not! I just can't find much to do here and actually, I've found that while it's much less expensive here compared to Michigan, northern Texas (like Mesquite ) is even cheaper but is closer to Dallas/Fort Worth and is FILLED with things to do for just about every type and class person.
I do enjoy the decreased "hustle-and-bustle" that I experienced back in MI and it is VERY peaceful living in this area, crime is farely low, the city is very clean, etc., but when I complet college, I plan to move to Mesquite. This is a great place to raise children, but my children are all adults, so that isn't a factor for me. Hope this helps

Austin Museum Partnership
A Few Austin Restaurants
Austin Circle of Theaters
Art Austin
That all took about five minutes to find - I didn't even have to break a sweat or thing of more than four topics to research. But there's "little to no museums and few things to do" in Austin.
Where have you been looking, besides 6th Street and the lake?

We have art museums, but they are relatively small. And they don't get the traveling exhibits like ones in larger cities do. The Bob Bullock museum is nice, but again, they don't get any major exhibits. Even the larger concert tours tend to go to San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas but not Austin. There are also no pro sports teams - there is minor league and college, but not a true professional team.
It's like saying we have a zoo. Well, yes, technically we do. But when compared to the zoos in other cities, it's more like a pet store.

Yes, all true but remember we are not a big city! Maybe we will become one someday, but we are just an overgrown town in a state with three much bigger cities.
Example, zoos. The Houston Zoo and San Antonio Zoo were both started in the 1920s, there was not the people or the money in Austin in the 1920s to start that kind of zoo.
The kind of institutions that some folks seem to want require major capital investment over decades, centuries even. The Austin zoo got its start in the 1990s! Check back in 80 years and then compare.

Important to note, while it calls itself a zoo, the Austin Zoo isn't really a zoo, it's an animal rescue operation. It is a small nonprofit that provides homes for exotic pets that owners can no longer care for. It was very sad to see those Lions and Tiger lying in those cages. I really don't understand how people think they can have a tiger for a pet!

Every single thing in Austin,Texas was a huge disappointment.
Very low morale at UT. Low morale amongst "fellow" students.
Very boring city. Nothing to do.

ROTFL I agree with Jay. By "liberal" they mean "sheltered big hick life style"...

Austin likes to toot its own horn about being free and liberal. Well its funny that I quite often see confederate stickers on gas-guzzling diesels sprinting down I-35.
My advice to anyone searching for urban nightlife in Austin, better yet any urban life in Austin....stop searching. You won't find any!!! Austin is just a place to get away for the weekend...not a place to stay.

Like I said, I took all of five minutes to come up with that. And I wasn't trying to compare Austin to NYC (a place my son loves and I would definitely NOT want to live - visit, but not live there). I was merely answering the statement that there's nothing to do in Austin.
Ran across this just a little while ago, too, for those who just can't find ANYTHING to do in Austin. (Makes one wonder how hard they're looking and do they have to be spoonfed entertainment?)
