I know a lot of younger folks that live there because they can walk to neighborhood restaurants, but also to the bars on W 6th.
I live in Clarksville, and although it's nice, I wouldn't live here if I had a job around 183. I'd definitely suck it up and live un-hip, pop into the downtown area on the weekends. After you make that commute in the evening, the only thing you think about is unwinding, not getting out and about.

From my experience, the reverse commute doesn't seem to be quite as bad in the morning. Back in the mid-1990s, it only took me around 20 minutes to get from Clarksville to the Far West Exit in the morning, but getting back home in the evenings took around an hour, longer if it was raining or one of the lanes shuts down. I'm not sure what traffic is like now. I eventually quit my job and found someplace closer in, because the gas cost was eating me alive, and the commute was exhausting. I got a job downtown, which shaved my commute time to 15 minutes. But if I hadn't found a job located centrally, I definitely would have moved to North Austin.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I'm looking to spend no more than 1,000 a month.

For how many bedrooms and baths? $800-1000 will get you an older 1 bedroom apartment in Central Austin with fewer amenities, but nothing newer/nicer or smack downtown. Those start at around $1300 for an efficiency.

In North Austin, your money really stretches. Newer complexes, more amenities, etc. If you live in a neighboring city like Cedar Park, Pflugerville or Round Rock, you can get something really, really nice. The further away you are from "hip," the cheaper rents get. That's how you can read rental listings and gauge the location of a prospective apartment/condo/house.

You could live off Mesa Drive up on the hill lots of apartments off that road. It would be closer to downtown and it tends to be a younger college aged crowd whereas the Arboretum tends to have a bit of an older crowd.
