Default Finding Good Beef Ribs in Austin

I've only been in Austin for 6 months now, but I would like to know who sells (butcher or restaurant) the biggest and best beef ribs. I've already gone to Blacks BBQ in Lockhart and their ribs were amazingly huge and delicious. Still, I don't feel like driving there (it takes me about an hour and 15 minutes each way) just to get beef ribs. Where can I find good beef ribs in Austin?

I do not generally eat at The County Line - but the single best thing on their menu is beef ribs. Also enjoyed them at The Iron Works.

I'd suggest Coopers but you're looking at a drive in the other direction. County Line has passable beef ribs.

The problem with BBQ in Austin is that as Texans we are spoiled by REAL bbq. The kind that you can only get at a shop that has been cooking BBQ for the last 100 years, generally using the same pits and recipes (I exaggerate, but you know what I mean). BBQ like that can ruin you for all other offerings. I don't want the piddly BBQ that you can get in town. To get the real stuff, you are going to have to drive. If I want smoked Brisket, I have to take a trip to Lockhart. It's like the law or something.

Or, I just do it at home on my smoker, if I have a day to kill. If that's the case, you don't need a specialty butcher. Just Go to HEB, flag someone down behind the counter at the meat market, and tell them what you want. A lot of people don't realize this about HEB, but if you ask the butcher to do a special cut for you, they generally will. If they don't have what you want, they will order it. Just dont' expect same day service, HEB, like most people, appreciates a little advanced notice. I buy their brisket straight from the case, they know what they are doing to begin with. If you don't like their rib offerings though, ask them about it. Tell them what you are looking for. They will get it for you, OR, they will tell you where to go to get it.

Coopers, in Llano is a bit far to drive from Austin, but if you are ever in the area make it a point to stop in. I had lunch there about a month ago, the beef ribs were delicious and huge, I swear mine must have been 3" thick with lots of beef on it.

I did not realize until I visited their website that there is also a Coopers in New Braunfels, Tx.

http://www.coopersbbq.com/

Many BBQ places sell their products mail order or federal express these days. Sadly Coopers does not list Beef Ribs on the mail order menu.

But the Ironworks does http://shopping.ironworksbbq.com/Meats-C1.aspx

I don't think Rudy's has beef ribs, they don't list them on their website menu. Rudy's "Country Store" and Bar-B-Q | Real Texas Bar-B-Q®

I have not eaten at the Salt Lick yet, but it does sell beef ribs on the website menu. Bar-B-Que - all - www.saltlickbbq.com (http://www.saltlickbbq.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?search=action&category=0100 - broken link)

They are on my list of places to try as soon as I get my fill of Chicken and Dumplings. Chicken and Dumplings in Central Texas

There's a Rudy's right down the street from me and they don't sell beef ribs. I'm not the crazy about their bbq anyway. Of the times that I went there, the bbq is hit or miss and know that I think about it, it's been more MISS than anything. I'll only go there in a pinch. I've heard of Salt Lick. I'll try to check them out.

County Line will be the closest place to get those big-ol beef ribs. Two locations, one NW and one SW.

As far as butchers/stores selling them, I've seen them plenty of times at HEB or Randalls. Might also try the Meat House: Austin TX restaurants: Restaurant reviews, happy hours, bars, drinks, dining | Austin360.com (http://www.austin360.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/dining/entries/2010/05/29/the_meat_house_comes_to_westla.html?cxntfid=blogs_ forklore - broken link)
