I'm frustrated with my big national bank. They make tons of money off me and treat me like pond scum. Hate having to punch numbers for 15 minutes to talk to a human.

Looking for a full service local bank for checking, savings, renovation loans (maybe in future), etc.

I'll trot out my Amplify Credit Union recommendation again. Most locations are on the north side but they are opening at 6th and Congress in a week. I've never been happier with any other credit union or bank. Any ATM fees get refunded the following day so it makes every ATM absolutely free to use. No more groaning at $2-$3 fees from another bank's ATM so I rarely ever even go to a branch.

University credit union is good too as well as Truwest. I refuse to bank with non-credit unions anymore, the banks are leaches.

UFCU. Don't reward another regular bank with your business; the credit unions have been running a responsible operation for decades now. I'll be right there with you...

I live centrally and work downtown if that makes a difference.

That hasn't been my experience at all (and we've been members for 40 years now). How recently have you had an account or done business with an actual bank? Trust me, UFCU is NOTHING like that! For one thing, they remember who they work for and are responsive to member concerns, in my experience.

OP, see if you can qualify to be a UFCU member, and, if not, check out any of the other credit unions in the area.

You can join by paying $15 to join the Wheatsville Co-op (grocery co-op mentioned in another thread), or by paying $20 to join the UT "Longhorn Association".

I too recommend you look into local credit unions. My favorite is A+FCU which used to be the Austin Area Teachers Federal Credit Union. Changes to credit union regulations now allow almost anyone to belong to one even if it was originally set up to serve a specific group, such as teachers. There are a huge number of teachers in the area who belong to this, giving it a broad base. They offer full services and almost always have the best interest rates in the area for their accounts, both loans and savings. We have been members for 33 years and still think highly of them.
