New life in Austin
Hey All,
While I'm very excited that we are moving to Austin, I'm a bit sad and nervous as well.
How do all the transplants deal with a whole new life in a whole new town? Do you get a bit lonely because you left your entire network somewhere else? How do you meet others?
Sorry if this sounds weird. I just have lived in the Bay Area for such a long time and have such great friends and know a lot of people in my neighborhood, so I'm just getting sad.
Thanks
B.

Hi there, we are in the bay area as well...east out near Oakley. We'll be moving as soon as we sell our home. I'm concerned over leaving my mom and brother (and his kids) but it seems from hanging here a while there are a lot of new people looking for friends. When I get down there and settled I plan to find some of ya'll and go out for coffee or something!

Yes you get lonely and you never stop missing your old friends.
But you meet people that atleast make it better.
You can meet peeps at your work, festivals, bars, community events...

Even though we had a very close-knit group of friends, I'm finding that we don't miss home as much as I thought we would. The internet has really changed the way we connect with people.
And, there's so much to do!
I would very much like to find a good way to meet other newbies, though.
Meet-up.com hasn't panned out well so far.
I'd like to meet other families new to the area who also would like to meet people.
I don't want to be a whiner, though. I know in time it will happen.
All in all, my husband and I are daily marveling that we didn't do this sooner.
Austin is great!

Thanks everyone
I'm sure we'll meet people at various places, but I just couldn't help but to get a little nervous moving to a place where we didn't know anyone at all.
Take Care all

greystonefarm, how has meetup not worked for you thusfar? I've made several new friends through it (though I've been here for years and years and years now - just looking for other folks with similar interests, I'm social that way ) - does it just not meet your interests or how is it not working?
I'd thought of it as a great way to meet people with similar interests when you're new in town.

I feel the same way as you. My husband has been in Austin since October 2007 and I will be moving down there next month. He has a few friends but I know no one. I am hoping to make some new friends as well with work, festivals and so on. Even though my friends now will only be 3 hours away, It's nice to know I can talk to them everyday online

My husband and I moved out there from the DC Metro area back in October and though we haven't really met many new people out here, we really haven't been too proactive about it so that will need to change. We were thinking of finding a running group to meet up with and train with, as well as finding some adult recreational classes (cooking, dancing, etc....) but I'm actually having a hard time finding an Austin site for this sort of thing. Maybe I'm searching incorrectly though so I'll keep on trying. I'll keep checking back with this thread though in case some more great ideas come up. I'll also check out that meet-up website that was mentioned above.
Cheers!
