And DO have a job offer firmly in place before you move. Please, please, please ... don't come here without a job. It could be very bad.

Excellent idea, and I actually thought about getting a temporary address in the city where I plan to do some serious career searching.

The ultimate spin on this is that Austin has always had very few financial jobs, good and bad times equally...this is in many cases a frill place to live for those looking to have a career in finance, as at best you may get outposts of places based in Houston, DFW, and such...you would have far far far far better luck in Houston and DFW, if your goal is just to live in a place with far better job prospects than Phoenix....

Try coming out to Austin for a month to personally hit these places up, if you really must come here, and then try DFW and Houston if it doesn't pan out...or Bartend, as that fellow posters friend did!
The DFW and Houston areas are my #2 pick for hitting the job market and exploring what the areas have to offer. Still want to check out Austin to see what the attractions are. TX seems so much better in many ways than AZ, except maybe the weather but I can contend with that as long as I'm working and have activities to occupy my time.

Thank you for the input.

Don't worry about that.

I'm not some derelict that wanders from place to place in hopes of finding my pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

My established roots are in PHX, so if nothing happens to work out in TX or the PNW I can always remain stuck here and perhaps find a job in the service field. I have higher hopes for both TX and the PNW in many areas besides jobs.
