As a hiring manager, I honestly haven't called references unless there was something that made my gut tell me to call to just verify something that sounded outlandish in an interview.
Ive never heard anything in a reference check that was worth using. We still do it as part of a mechanism to get a potential employee to be more honest. When we talk to X about the job you did there, what would he say?

I have received a lot of reference checks - probably for 50% of the people that have worked here.

I had applied at company back in May and they sent my current employer a request for recommendation. When I had my evaluation in June, my current employer asked about the recommendation and ask I if was planning to leave. I had informed the employer that I was interested in a leadership position; however, I would never leave for a lateral position. Now, it is July and a leadership position came up at my current company and I applied. My current employer use the recommendation letter as a reason not to give me the position. Is this fair? What can I do to keep it from happening again?

You may want to consider posting this question in the Work and Employment sub-forum
