This is a strange case. Witnesses are saying that the gunman was shooting in their direction, but not at them. There were people that he could have shot but didn't. It seems that he didn't want to hurt anyone but himself. It is definitely sad, but also confusing. I agree that it is too bad that he didn't get the help he needed, but I don't think that is societies' fault.

The shooter was just a baby, a child... only 19. How very sad.

All the newsies are reporting that his home on Brodie & Wm Cannon is being searched by APD.

Moderator cut: orphaned people will make bad and deadly choices with or without guns.

Moderator cut: orphaned friends and family might have some personal influence. But I doubt there is much the faculty could have done, if they became aware of an ill person. My wife taught at ACC for years, she says that they had very little recourse when they encountered a student who appeared to be seriously mentally ill. And she encountered several. Their counselors could not deal with anything serious, they could make recommendations to the student, but could not even refer them to any medical authority who could do more. UT is not much different, they may have marginally better medical services, but no capability or legal authority to refer an "ill" student to counseling or therapy.

Some posts about gun control were deleted. That's a political topic that's not on-topic in a local forum. Keep it local to keep it on topic.

This is truly a sad event, and my heart goes out to the shooter, the students at UT and the shooter's parents. I don't see this as an indictment of guns, the mental health system or UT security. I see it as a manifestation of how vacuus and inhuman our society has become.

The fact that this poor guy couldn't reach out to anyone and share the turmoil he was in is horrible. It's obvious he was very driven, very successful and at a certain point it just wasn't enough. What a shame.

I did go to UT Austin for their free mental health services. My friend was murdered by a rapist which put me into a state of shock. I did not receive empathy or sympathy from any of the UT counselors. In fact, I was shouted at and scolded as if I had done something wrong. Something seemed terribly wrong there. Everything was a big argument or a big huge ordeal with them. It was traumatizing to say the least. Their supervisor did not care about my points of view. Very unprofessional IMHO.

If this person needed a therapist and didn't get one, cost was probably not the issue. He probably just didn't want to go to therapy. Blaming the population of Austin for the actions of one crazy person, while typical of you, is not accurate.

UT Austin has psychiatrists. So why do I not believe you?
