I guess Austin is the exception now eh ?

Yes, true Texans do not honk! Whenever I hear someone honk, usually not at me, I always tell my kids in the car "that was not a Texan!"

The #1 reason I will honk (and I do) is when I am traveling on a road, say 360, traveling the speed limit in the right lane, and someone pulls out (from Westlake drive for example) and I have to drastically slow down to accommodate the intrusion into the roadway.

Those are times I wish my vehicle had an air horn.

DON'T sit there when you have a protected merge lane. Keep driving and either speed up and slow down to merge. I imagine people are honking at you because they think you don't understand that the merge lane is protected. What drives me nuts is when someone stops because they want to illegally cross a solid white line and get into the next lane, instead of using a protected merge lane. I don't care how un-Texan that makes me, I will honk on something like that.

That drives me crazy too! (But I still don't honk. I will give a half-honk when someone is on the cell phone and misses that light has turned green but I still feel guilty about it and blame the twenty years I spent outside of Texas!)

I don't get all this horn-honking going on lately. Not at me, but just in general - I hear way more than I ever have in the past. People's level of impatience is crazy. So what if you have to wait a few more seconds - you have no clue what the other driver may be going through or their unfamiliarity with wherever they may be.

If it's that important, perhaps they shouldn't be operating a motor vehicle.

It's quite obvious that they're mentally unable to perform two tasks at once, and operating a 2000lb vehicle must ill in comparison to the very important activities distracting them from driving.

I guess it depends on where you have come from.
I've lived in Florida and NYC and honking goes on all the time.
It was an adjustment when I moved to Texas..but a nice one I might add.

And someone who is so all-fired in a hurry and impatient that they must honk at someone who isn't rushing out in traffic so that they can do likewise shouldn't be operating a motor vehicle, either, because it's clear they are not in an appropriate frame of mind to be doing so.

Sheesh! Get a grip, folks!

What's irritating is when you stop in traffic to let someone on the road from a driveway, and they're on a cell phone and they're not paying attention. I honk at them then keep driving, just so they can see the 100 foot long gap in traffic that I held for them, then subsequently took back.
