You can hit the meat jackpot here. Best steak in town for my money is Austin Land and Cattle on 12th and Lamar- not to be confused with the chain Texas Land & Cattle, which also has pretty good, if not superb steak at about half the price. You gotta work quite hard to get a bad steak in this town. By far the best BBQ brisket within city limits is at Franklin's on the frontage road of I35. Spectacular when they're on, but not always consistent and only open 11 till they run out - often within 2 hours Wed-Sunday. Also recently had a superb piece of tenderloin at Buenos Aires Cafe on east 6th Street. Both Justine's and Chez Nous have very good steak frites if you like your meat Frenchified. The big chains downtown McCormick & Schmick's et al have excellent steak too, but you can get that in many other cities too. Never mind all the excellent carne asada at a hundred taco joints across town. You should have no problem in finding delicious beef in many different forms all over Austin.

If you're looking for the best BBQ in town, I'd say go to House Park BBQ for lunch (they don't serve dinner). They're on 12th street just east of Lamar.

I agree with homeinatx - as a confirmed carnivore, I have absolutely no problem finding really good beef in all its myriad of wonderful forms in Austin.

I would say you probably cant find a good prime rib in town. Also the beef in the area is touted as grass fed which generally is not marbled/fatty as beef should be. When I went home to the midwest, the steaks there from the grocery store were better than any steak I have had in texas in the last 15 years. For steaks we generally go to austin land and cattle, but my preference is sullivans (which is a chain). Ruth's chris is probably the best (corn fed beef) but it is also a chain and is out of my price range.

Your best bet is to go brisket. My most important criteria is the tenderness of the meat. I cant stand dry beef at all. My favorite is rudy's extra moist - although some people on here claim their local bbq place is the best.

I have tried most of them except city market in luling and rudy's extra moist is still the best. Get the creamed corn, but dont get anything else there (except maybe ribs). Also, if the cut they give you is not glistening, shiny and pretty much falling apart then it isnt a good cut and just ask them to give you another one. This happens about 1/5 times.

Well I do know that with all the obese people running around metro austin, the BBQ MUST be great!! I can certainly attest to that! I personally like County Line and Salt Lick!!

A real carnivore might want to try one of the two Brazilian style steakhouses in Austin. I think Fogo de Chao is a bit better and more upscale than Estancia, but both have a variety of excellent beef, all skewered and seasoned very well.

I second the brazilian steakhouse suggestion - try the Estancia Churrascaria (Ben White @ Westgate). Bring a defibrillator with you.

There's a little hole in the wall joint in Kyle on the I-35 frontage road just south of southbound exit 213 called Milt's Pit BBQ that has absolutely DIVINE melt in your mouth, take the dentures out & gum it to death tender brisket ... am drooling just thinking about it! Their tater salad (they call me ... Tater Salad) & beans are some of the best I've found & I'm extremely picky when it comes to my BBQ sides. They are a CASH ONLY joint, but do have an onsite ATM. These guys are way above any of the other BBQ stars. We use them all of the time to cater company events & have gotten rave reviews from others who've tried them

Hmmm ... now I know where I'm going for lunch today!
