ANOTHER UPDATE:
We've been in the Hays Independent School District since Aug 22nd. My child was tested immediately (based on my observations, not on past testing because he didn't have any) and has already started in the dyslexia program there. They see the dyslexia specialist at school five days a week. On Mondays, they see her for a short time, one-on-one. Tuesday through Friday they meet with her in small groups for 45 minutes each day. I have been fighting with teachers/administrators for four years now just to get him tested and here we are, barely 4 weeks under our belt, and he's in the program. I asked how long he'll be able to be in the program and they said as long as he needs it. They even have dyslexia programs in the middle and high schools here. To say the least, we are thrilled!

Hooray! Way to go HISD! I wish it was so easy in other districts.

My youngest child is profoundly dyslexic and now attends Rawson-Saunders. It is amazing, every class, every teacher, down to the physical layout and schedule is set up for dyslexics. For this particular child, it is the only place for him right now.

Up here in Leander ISD they also have a dyslexia specialist on every campus..now to get them same attention for other learning problems..dysgraphia amd others..can you tell we have dysgraphia?lol. I have many friends in the dyslexia program up here and they love it and they kids have great results. I know they use a different program from Scottish Rite not sure what it is. It is a five day a week program also.

I second Rawson Saunders if at all possible. It really is the best for dyslexic kids in Austin.

We really thought about Rawson-Saunders... it seems like a great place. It was just too far for us to drive daily and although my child is dyslexic, he's got great coping skills and has always done fairly well, in school, testing, etc. We really think we've found a good spot for him. And he loves it!

At least there are options for families, central, south and north... hopefully this info will help other families along the way.

Could anyone give me any suggestions as to schools in Austin or surrounding areas that have great resources for not only dyslexia but dyscalculia. My son was at Rawson Saunders for 2 years however due to financial situation we are having to look for other alternative. Thx

Yes, RS is punishing financially! I looked back at this thread and saw my tuition comment from 2010 and just laughed, significantly higher now.

How old is your child? What is your public option? Dyscalculia is a killer!! Very hard to find places that handle that well. Are you looking for this fall? Most private schools have completed their admission process. St Francis Schools is great for dyslexia and most other learning issues, not sure about dyscalculia but the bigger problem is that the admission cycle is over and lately they tend not to have spaces available. Too bad Scottish Rite Learning Center isn't still around.

What does your testing say? Could you try for 504 or even special ed in a public school?
