I was wondering the same. I didn't hear anything else about what was the cause. Just only the bad news. Of course our media always loves to sell bad news the the public.....

Speaking of shootings, has anyone heard an update on the MoPac driver who 'defended' himself against another motorist by shooting at him/his vehicle while driving down the highway? I haven't heard a peep since the initial reports.

Find almost all city crime rankings here:

CQ Press: City Crime Rankings 2009

Chicago isn't listed....and I can hardly blame them.

Of course I would, as long as they can pass the same credit and reference checks I require of anyone else.

Violent crime, not so much. In property crimes we are way ahead except in auto theft and arson.

Holy ****! I knew some of the seedier parts of Austin have high amounts of theft (I remember walking back from school one day and the cops were dragging this older kid who had stolen a TV out from hiding under our porch; luckily not our TV!), but I didn't know we were THAT much farther ahead of them! Damn.

With the crime rates in Austin being what they are, I think there's only one man who can stand up the task of cleaning up our streets.

*WARNING: SOME STRONG LANGUAGE AND LOTS OF BADASSERY*

Theft is high because our "TRUE" economy for jobs here SUCKS!! Lot's of people do not have job or do, but barely post rent and I think that theft is high and Pawn-Shops are getting rich!

The tough thing about these comparisons is that the reporting varies greatly from city to city. In some places with lots of violent crime, property crimes are generally low on the priority list for the police, which leads to a reluctance by victims to even report petty crimes because they know it will pretty much be a waste of time. These types of stats are probably best used for comparing a city to itself over a period of time, and even for this purpose there will be problems. A couple of years ago, Dallas changed the way it reported certain types of crime incidents. Previously multiple incidents committed by the same criminals in roughly the same time period were reported as separate incidents. Now they are grouped as one incident. The police also started taking a skeptical approach to some crime reports; i.e. if you reported that someone burglarized your car but didn't follow up, with an investigator, they would drop your incident from the list. These modifications had a big impact on the crime rates and pulled Dallas down several places in the rankings, even though overall crime had actually changed very little.
