Hi,

I am thinking about going to Austin for Halloween from Houston (I did this last year and Halloween on 6th street was a blast).

The problem I have is for some reason I just can't seem to find a cheap hotel/motel anywhere near downtown. Last year I was able to find a place south of downtown (across the river) on Congress Ave for something pretty reasonable. I believe it was around $70-100/night. Now when I look I don't see anything available and downtown is crazy expensive ($200-300/night).

Any tips on what to do or where to find cheaper place? I am just looking to get there on Saturday around 4pm, spend the evening/night there and leave on Sunday.

I really loved Halloween on 6th street in Austin last time, liked the atmosphere and like Austin people more in general .

Might try priceline. Choose 4 star in downtown, there are only a few hotels that will come up and they are all good. ONLY choose downtown/4 stars -- other areas are too spread out in priceline, you could end up with something on the highway 10 miles away. It's too hit or miss. So just downtown, just 4 stars.

Check biddingfortravel.com, look at the Austin forum, and you can see what people are having to bid to win hotel rooms that night. It's probably not going to be $70, but maybe you can find something for a $90-100+ bid.
