Sean, I'm sorry you were greeted with a tired attempt at humor as opposed to a helpful response. Bear in mind that this is an online forum and you probably won't get the types of answers you really need from it. If moving to Austin is really what you want, then you'll need to construct the plan on your own and with resources culled from outside of City-Data. Don't rely on anything from this forum.

First off, welcome to America. I am sorry to hear that your refugee center is not very helpful. Perhaps there are some other non-profits in your community which can assist you in fleshing out your plans for your move? Have you tried asking your previous group for any recommendations?

Don't worry about your English not being that good. There are people who were born and raised in this country and their English leaves a lot to be desired. Just keep practicing. Maybe find a conversation buddy? And try and read out loud if you can! It need not be anything complex. Poetry is always nice, but maybe just pick a short story, or heck, some Dr. Seuss. I love reading Dr. Seuss out loud. Language is very much like a fine wine or gourmet food, you have to train yourself for it. You'll develop a proficiency for English if you are willing to taste the words on your tongue and not just read them.

It's good that you have a car as Austin is not equipped with a decent public transportation infrastructure. As far as lodging is concerned, I would maybe troll Craigslist for potential roommates. But be prepared for any housing situation to exhaust most (if not all!) of your funds. Austin is expensive. As for employment, well, Austin is not a good place to look for work. The job market here is highly competitive and exasperatingly nepotistic.

Lastly, if you do find your way down here and are able to find a place to stay and work, look into taking classes with ACC, that's Austin Community College. It's a great place to start if you're interested in transferring to a four-year degree program. I know a few people who did so and they were very pleased with their time at ACC. Some even found it more engaging and rewarding than their time at their respective four-year universities.

You have a lot on your plate. None of what you're after will be easy, but these days nothing's really easy. Oh, and if you can afford it, I would really, REALLY recommend visiting Austin before you make any permanent moves. Visit in the summer to see if you'll be able to tolerate the heat. The heat is oppressive.

Ultimately, Austin is just a town. No more, no less. The streets are not gilded and the people here are just people.

Otherwise, I wish you the best of luck.

Cheers!

check out this other post of theirs and you'll see why jobert remarked as they did. Also, if you revert to the other post they made you will also see I gave them a link. Also, a band name such as that would suck. Although I did like the tip of using Dr. Seuss.

Here is the other post from another thread....

Sean, jobs are still fairly easy to come by here in Austin, but it's hard to get a place to live without a job, and hard to get a job without a place to live. Best of luck with your move, though - if you do come here I'm sure you'll love it. Austin's a great city, and an easy place to live.
