Crime around 290/71/Ben White (Howe: houses, safest neighborhood, live)

Anyone familiar with crime in this area? I'm particularly looking at Manchaca Road and 290 - zipcode 78704. I've driven around the area, but it's kind of hard to tell.

I just bought a house off of cardinal (about a 5 minute walk from South 1st and ben white. Lots of homeless folks around ben white, but the area isn't really crime ridden. i walk my dog on s 1st at night without any concern for my safety.

Now, if you go SOUTH of ben white, things can get a smidge dicey.

I agree with the other poster. I work at a retail shop in the area and there are quite a few homless who "live" under the freeway overpass at ben white and Lamar. However, outside of being asked for spare change every once in a while, I don't know of any problems they have caused. The area north of ben white feels safer. I do know there is some redevelopment going on in the area where houses are being sold for over $400K...so, someone has some faith in the area.

I think there is a place on line you can check police reports. I have only done it once, because they list every little thing and it makes even the safest neighborhoods sound scary.
