Default Bay Area folks in Austin?

Anybody from the Bay Area move to Austin recently? How's the adjustment so far? I'll be in Austin in the fall and any tips would be appreciated.

We'll be out there soon...hubby scheduled to start work in September. Just waiting on this house to sell.

Can't give you any specifics as we're not there yet, but we're in Contra Costa county now...are you downtown?

We really loved the Austin area.

Yes. About 10,000 of them.

Tips:
1. You'll need some spurs ASAP. Gold ones are preferable.
2. Nobody wears 10 gallon hats anymore. You need to go 20 gallons or higher.
3. You'll want to go ahead and get some bandoleers with shotgun shells on them.
4. Be sure to complain about the heat as much as possible... it'll mark you as a true Texan.

Thumbs up Just got here

I've been here a week with my two small children, waiting for my husband to drive out. People are very friendly and the public pools and parks are great. We stay indoors for most of the day, due to the heat, but mornings and evenings are pleasant.
The freeways are a bit difficult at first. Surface streets that run parellel are one-way, which often means you must make a big loop under the freeway and circle back in order to arrive at your destination. I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.
Also, there are tons of trees, so I don't feel like I'm in a city at all (we are in the northwest part of town). It's quite nice, except for occassional twangs of missing SF. I can pretend the haze is fog when I'm inside.

Well, I'll miss a lot of friends and family but I'm quite sure I won't miss the fog around here...even though there is less here inland we still get it sometimes and it's so hard to drive in.

Sigh...can't wait to get out there! Praying and praying our home will sell!

I moved here from SF 7 years ago.
The first thing I had to addapt to was the heat. I spent a year hiding indoors with the AC cranked.

Second thing was how friendly everyone was. I thought it was fake and they were all up to something.

The red lights. Wow are they long!

People seemed to move so slow. Like they had all the time in the world...

I had to drive aways to get downtown.

Not having the ocean right there is and continues to be the hardest thing for me.

It took me a year to adapt to everything. It has to be HOT by Texan standards before I complain. I run yellow lights to avoid the reds. I grab magazine off the rack at the grocery store and read it while the cashier has long conversations with each customer he's ringing up.
People are actually friendly.
