OK, I'm starting a new thread on this instead of hijacking another one. I have never lived in an area that has needed private water companies and want to get the scoop. Many houses I've seen in Driftwood/Wimberley state 'private water co.' as a water source. What is that exactly? Is this the only source of water for these developments out there? I've seen other houses that have wells but I'm guessing there is no city water in these areas. How is this sustainable with the growth in Hays Co? Are there pros/cons to private water companies? I'm really starting from zero here. Please educate!

One thing to do is to find out who the water company is and give them a call and talk to them.

I'm out in Travis county outside the city limits and have private water also.
Manville Water Supply. It functions just like if you lived inside the city limits...pipes along the road and to the house, a monthly bill, an annual water report. My bill averages $25/month ..maybe $30 in the summer. Been out here for over 10 years now and never had a problem. The meter is at the top of the driveway and they come read it once a month for billing.
Manville also serves some of Pflugerville and some other subdivisions outside the city limits.

Hope that helps some.

So, the water is from the same source, the pipes and delivery are just privatized?

Yes, with Manville it's just like what you have in the city limits.

What you'd need to do is find out if the private company that you're looking into operates the same way.

And you might also inquire about electric.
I have TXU but there are electric co-ops that operate in some areas outside the city limits. I have TXU so don't have any firsthand experience dealing with co-ops.

Dealing with electric cooperatives is just like dealing with a city electric company, except that you're a member and every few years you might get a tiny check from them because of that.
