Again, if the speed limit it posted, and you're speeding and get caught, it's not a "trap". It's law enforcement. There's a big difference.

Now, if there was a speed limit sign that said the speed limit was 90 mph and you were going 85 and the speed limit was actually 70, that would be a "speed trap".

Getting caught doing something that you decided all on your own to do cannot in any way be considered to be a trap.

Well.....somewhat true, but there can be overzealousness on the part of the county folks who are looking to make a buck!

I repeat. If the speed limit is X, and you are driving X or below, chances are pretty good that you're not going to get caught in a "speed trap" because (a) you're not speeding and (b) it would cost them too much for a case they're not going to win, thus no extra bucks.

If you are speeding, on the other hand, you haven't been "trapped", you've been "caught", and there's a not-so-subtle difference between the two. Painful as that might be to acknowledge. "Wait. You mean something bad happened to me and it's my own danged fault? That couldn't possibly be the case!"

I wish I could fine you for calling it "the 1" and "the 290".

Speed traps in Austin? Try Selma or Florence (between Austin and Ft. Hood). Selma was memorialized in Steve Earle's first single "Guitar Town". Florence is so bad against soldiers that a national news program showed a bearded guy driving through at 5 miles over the limit with no ticket, shaved him, and he promptly got a ticket at something like 3 miles over the limit.

I speed, so occasionally I get tickets. They're my fault and my responsibility, so I pay them or take defensive driving. Put on your big boy/girl britches and own up to your actions.

Cops lazy? Tell that to the WilCo deputy who patrols my old neighborhood, and knows many of the families by name. Even better, he knows which kids are heading down the wrong paths, and has once or twice been back at their house before they get home from that evening's delinquency.

Police out of control...because of a speed trap...NO! If you are speeding, you'll get caught. If you are not, no worries. They are doing their job, enforcing the law. Never had a speeding ticket!

How is someone punishing you for breaking the law 'out of control'?

Speeders generally also dart in and out of traffic, pass on the right, tailgate, and make lane changes without signaling, while talking or texting on their phones.

People that drive and act that way are simply inconsiderate *******s.
