Agree with you that Austin has become a police state (on the roads). APD is broke, and this is their fundraising. Have lived in 6 states and this is the worst i have seen. One of the very few things i dislike about Austin.

i'd suggest slowing down and being more aware of all the swarming cops in this town.

Don't agree with you on the radar detectors, though. If you are going to start a charity for these, it would be utterly weird and fitting as Austin

It's a conspiracy man. Ticket fines go to the general city fund. Also the PD is not broke. The city is broke.

Very little City Budget Revenue comes from fines, only 3.1% while the Police Dept. budget makes up 39% of the total City Budget Expenses.

Read more about it here. Page 86 breaks down the Cities Revenue sources, Page 87 lists the Expenditures.
http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/budget/09...al%20Draft.pdf

Austin has only 2.03 police officers per 1,000 residents, as compared to the Texas average of 2.23 per 1,000 residents. Doesn't look much like swarming to me.

pjoseph2, do you get tickets? If so, were you driving above the speed limit or breaking whatever law it was you got the ticket for when you got them? If so, what's your gripe, really? How do you justify it being all about the APD and not at all about the consequences of your own choices and actions?

Could be, if traffic violators are being ticketed, that this is the BEST you've seen it in six states. It's all in your point of view, and from the point of view of the criminal, the police are always going to be trapping them, out of control, and it's going to be viewed as a police state. Whether the criminals are breaking into houses or driving like maniacs, the point of view will be the same.

It's something. Handing out tickets is such a small part of the job, but everybody thinks that's all the police do all the time.

I drive the speed limit on the Interstate usually because traffic is so damn bad I have no other option. When I can speed I use cruise control. I think the speed trap thing is aggressive. Saturday morning on I-35 is a disgrace. 10 cop cars pulling over people going to work. Very counter-productive.

There you have it, folks. No conspiracy here.

Yes, enough cops for APD to be a city by itself

Someone has to pay for those new 176 Ford CVs purchased just this past week.

Again, the question is, ARE THEY SPEEDING WHEN THEY'RE PULLED OVER? No matter WHERE they're going or when they're doing it?

If they are, it's not a "trap". It's law enforcement. If people were breaking into houses right and left and stealing things and being arrested for it, and the police were making lots of arrests in neighborhoods where this was a known problem, would you call it a "burglary trap" and be outraged on behalf of the burglars? If not, why not? Under the reasoning I'm seeing here, it would be exactly the same thing.

I don't believe you. The only time I have ever seen 10 cop cars on IH-35 was when some guy was threatening to jump off of an overpass. They talked him out of it. Good jobs guys!
