It is interesting to determine a personal 'threshold' regarding fuel costs and the impact they have on 'extraneous' activities. Tougher still is the impact on necessary day-to-day driving by folks who have already felt the brunt of the 'economy'. We're fortunate to be able to drive wherever we need/want to go; but, at some point, I do have to consider the cost of a trip of fifty, eighty, one hundred miles--purely in fuel expense. Fifteen or twenty years ago, these sorts of fuel expenses would have hit me much harder; likely necessitating a tougher stance on driving habits. As it is now, I do tell myself on occasion: "Dang, it cost $8 in fuel just to use that $10 Groupon at lunch".

It'll be interesting to follow the change in diesel cost since it's been running about 20% more than reg petrol locally. Last time, it stayed a dollar a gallon higher and held that as petrol prices fell. I'm thinking B-I-L is glad he sold his Silverado big ole honkin' thing a few weeks ago. 12mpg on the highway is not cool.

I'm a little surprised at how rapidly the price has risen, though. I noticed gas was already $3.20/gal at most places on the way to work. That's a 20 cent increase in two days if my reckoning is correct.

In the short term, people will drive less, to avoid filling up as often.
As the price of gas steadily increases in the long term, you'll see more behavioral change. People will purchase more fuel efficient (or alternative energy) vehicles, take transit, bike, walk, etc. People might relocate closer to work.
I welcome the change. It will cost me more to drive my car but it will also make myself and everyone else think about reducing their amount of driving (by either short term or long term behavioral/purchasing changes), which in the long term, has greater benefit for society in terms of reducing oil dependence, emissions, surburban sprawl, increasing ped/bike activity to help health.

Er yes, but that is not the only acronym for MILF. I would say the ‘other’ is the more commonly used.
