Hello, all!

The past two months I have noticed a charge on my electric bill that has never been there before. It is a 5 dollar/month charge for solid waste. I emailed and asked them about this and they told me to contact 311?

We live in an apartment community and already pay sewage with our water bill and a 5 dollar a month trash fee with our rent. What is with this solid waste charge, and how is it related to my electric bill?

City of Austin bills for electricity, water, wastewater, storm sewer and solid waste, street cleaning, etc. all on one bill. They charge for pick up and disposal of solid waste. If your apartment complex charges you a trash fee with your rent it is probably for whatever handling they do of it on site.

Have any idea why it has never been on my bill before? I went back and looked at the past 8 months of bills we have had since moving here, and it has only been on the past two months.

I don't know, call them and ask. Its possible your apartment complex told them to start passing that cost on to the individual renters rather then paying it themselves. If the apartment complex is billing you also, perhaps they are trying to get away with something.
