Default Dog bites - Austin

The first link is in the news regarding a dog that bit a child. The second link is list of all dogs registered in Austin that have bitten. (that is my understanding of the list, if I'm wrong please correct)

Pit bull attacks for third time, latest victim is 10-years-old | kvue.com | KVUE News | Austin, TX | Breaking News

What I don't understand is why the city has to wait until the dog bites THREE times before it can take action.

The three times thing seems just traditional. It was in effect even in the 60s, when my sister was bitten in San Antonio, and the dog had to be put down because it was the third time. I'm sure it is a judgement call, in that there are nips and bites and then the "tear you appart" reaction that was apparently in the case you sited. It seems to me that this particular type of attack should be dealt with after one incedent, not three.

Just like to say thanks to Marilyn Stiles for working toward the passage of Lillian's Law which resulted in a mandate that a dog like this be seized. Her 70 year old mother Lillian was attacked, killed, and mauled beyond recognition as she mowed her yard.

A coworker's daughter was just bitten by her own dog. I believe it was the first time it's happened, but her dog has to be quarantined for 10 days.

Interesting that some of these breeds are considered dangerous: Labs, Border Collie and a Chihuahua? I have a Border Collie and I know that, especially as puppies, they have a tendency to bite and nip, because of their herding instinct, but I'm just not sure how much damage a Chihuahua could do to someone. I know they can be cranky and probably pretty nippy if you got too close to a cranky one, but honestly, how hard would it be to take one of them off your ankle? Sorry for being glib, just trying to be silly I know that there are dogs who have done horrific things because of bad owners.

Dogs will bite, it's a fact of life. Seriously attack is a different story.
