Hey Minnesota! Wisconsin here I'll be moving to Austin this summer for grad school. Did you guys get snow today?

If you decide to move down there you'll have to send me a message about what you think! What company did you get a job at? I live in Madison, WI right now so we've got lakes all around also- I feel you on loving the lake scene. I live always lived within walking distance of the water and I hope to be near it in Austin. I guess there's no "up north" to run away to in TX, hey?

I'm freaking out too, especially all this stuff I keep reading about roaches and scorpions? What the heck? Bugs die here in November, I don't even know how they reappear in June. I think I'm going to make a trip in April to look around. Also there's no pond hockey, but then again there's no frozen endless winter either!

No, not compared with the commute going the other way. The only bad part is southbound Mopac (Loop 1) during the evening commute before say around 6:30-7pm. It tends to get clogged pretty well after an accident as well. That typically happens when people don't look far enough ahead before a traffic slow-down, and then rear-end the car ahead of them. Happens a lot. Northbound is almost always clear after you cross Town Lake during the morning commute.

Check the traffic web page, it tends to be pretty accurate:

My family is also from Minnesota and I enjoy lakes as well. Austin's "lakes" are actually the Colorado River. They're not bad, though.

I like walking around Town Lake (aka Lady Bird Lake) which is located directly south of downtown. I often walk there on weekends or during my lunch break at work.

I'm not sure where your job is but there are some nice apartment complexes in West Austin and Westlake near Lake Austin as well. The "exciting area to be out and meet people" is definitely downtown, though. Contrary to what many say it IS possible to find a reasonably-priced apartment very near downtown (probably not one of the high-rise condos, though).

Can anyone recommend a good/ active area to look into down there? I LOVE the lakes here in MN and I know there are a few in Austin, but also want an exciting area for a single male where I can be out and meet people. Would Downtown be a good place? Around one of the lakes?

Any and all info is very much appreciated! Thanks!
I would totally try to find a condo downtown - sounds like you would love it. And just to reiterate what someone else already said - we don't truly have a Minnesota-ish lake - it's more of a wide part of a river - running through town. But there are some bigger lakes (Lake Travis - a really big wide part of the same river) and Lake Buchanan within reasonable drives of downtown.

Enjoy ATX!
