I was in Portland a couple of months ago and I kept seeing "Keep Portland Weird" everwhere! I tried to tell my nephew who lives there that it was just a rip-off from Austin. He refused to believe me. I'm really mad, for some reason.
Plus, Portland is not weird to begin with!

Sorry, I have to say that is the funniest thing I have heard in a LONG time.
I have lived in SW Washington most of my life and Portland is the mothership of all the FREAKS out there!!!!!!!!!!! Anytime I fly back home, I can pick the ones going to Portland out a mile away!!!

Austin may have coined the phrase but Portland is beyond weird............

jennyb315 - Abbbbbsolutely!! I used to live off Hawthorne St in Portland, and have to agree that it is WAY weirder than Austin.

I think they haven't used the 'Weird' slogan because they didn't realize they WERE!! LOL

Portland IS weird. If you don't know that you just haven't been in the right place.

Try SE Portland/Hawthorne district.

But I'm sorry someone swiped the slogan. I guess it's a compliment because they thought it was so catchy/clever.

I don't like that they stole it either. They should get their own catch phrase.

The other day here in Austin I did see a bumper sticker I hadn't seen before. It read, "Keep San Antonio lame."

Speaking of these two cities, Austin is constantly poaching ideas from Portland. On at least two occasions the city has paid to send teams of researchers to Portland to learn how to make Austin a better city. Portland is the place that's leading the way with green growth, smart planning, public transportation and walkable mixed-use urban neighborhoods. So, we can forgive them for poaching a bumper sticker slogan. Louisville, KY, is also using the slogan. It's kind of lost its meaning in Austin. Now I'm starting to see bumper stickers that say things like "Being weird isn't enough."

I lived in Portland for 10 years and although there were definitely some oddballs there, I felt like Portland was such an earnest, serious place. Always trying to be P.C. and green and very, very responsible.

Interestingly, there is a similar tag in Louisville : "Keep Lexington Lame." In Louisville's defense, our Keep Louisville Weird Slogan came out before Portland's, and not long after Austin's:

Keep Louisville Weird

Keep Lexington Lame : WHY Louisville: A Fan Club for the City (http://www.whylouisville.com/detail.asp?id=5 - broken link)

People never want to believe it because the stereotypes associated with KY, but Louisville is very similar to an "undiscovered" Austin. Louisville and Austin are much alike based on my visits. I have never been to Portland, but I am going this year.

I've always wanted these two bumper stickers:

Get Texas Out Of Austin! (cuz the state legislature meets here and they hate Austin politics)

and

The Closer You Get, The Slower I Drive (cuz I hate tailgaters!)
