What I meant by that was it is more common in older parts of older cities to see that kind of arrangement. It is becoming more common now that people have had a renewed interest in walkable neighborhoods. Several developments along these lines have cropped up in Austin.

The Triangle development has some of this. Triangle Austin Apartments | Austin Lofts | Austin Townhomes | Triangle Park | Triangle Retail

Also there are some apartments or condo's south of the Driskill Hotel downtown, they were built about 20 years ago. Also the AMLI apartments near City Hall all have retail space and restaurants on the first floor.

There is a new development planned South of Slaughter Lane, along the West side of IH-35 that proposed apartments over shops and retail. We had a thread here about that in the last year or so, I will see if I can find it.
