It's worth the extra $12 per month to get XM/Sirius to not only bypass the commercials, but to hear good Indie music (XMU, AltNation, etc.) Either that, or streaming Internet radio/Pandora/Slacker over 3G/WiFi (iPhone/iPod) which can even easily be done in a vehicle as a lot of newer vehicles have aux inputs or bluetooth for this purpose. Even my $120 Blu-Ray player at home can stream Pandora to my living room at no charge. I have no reason to ever listen to local radio unless I want to listen to local sports talk.

KUT has too poor of a signal and the programming schedule is too weird that it's tough to actually hear continuous music. 101X plays the same mainstream alternative over and over again. Local radio is dying. If you must listen to a "local" radio station, you're better off streaming KEXP.org from the Seattle local market. It's 10 times better than anything in the Austin area and I'm not from Seattle.

I guess my point is a bit off topic, but it's basically that you can't judge anything by what is being played on the radio dials.
Makes sense! I haven't been in the U.S. for nearly ten years.

Actually I don't even remember an Americana genre back than...but I love the genre now!

Actually I've been inquiring around on other boards to which I thought might be hotspots. Kind of familiar story that it's just not on many airwaves - except Knoxville, it seems!

But not even Providence is getting it...which is another I thought would have a station or two.

Thanks for the great info about Austin. In that sense, a person could be anywhere with the SIRUS...even over here, living abroad, like myself.

Thanks for the great post.

It sounds like the "Outlaw Country" station on XM/Sirius might be to your liking, but as you stated, you can definitely do some streaming of Americana music dedicated stations over the Internet. Shoutcast has a pretty good directory. I've pasted a couple links below.

Americana Radio Stations - Free Internet Radio

Rockin' Country Rebels - Country - Music - Outlaw Country - SiriusXM Satellite Radio - SiriusXM Radio
