We have found ourselves with some time off and want to take the kids somewhere two weeks from now. Thinking of where we could drive to from Austin, that is about no more than 10 hours away...needs to be kid friendly. (kids are 6 and 9) Here are some places I was thinking about:

South Padre (but can we find a place to stay on such short notice?)
New Mexico (but not sure where)
Hot Springs, Ark...(never been, good for kids?)

Any ideas??? We are open to lots of ideas!

Frio River is good. South Padre is the best beach in Texas. Those two are usually my go-to choices.

Default Thought about the Frio....

We haven't been there either. Do you have any recommendations on where to stay? And do you know if the river has water in it (enough to tube?).
Thanks for responding!

I don't think Hot Springs is necessarily a kid-friendly destination. The biggest attraction there for them would be the lake and you can save gas money and go to the lake here!

S Padre would be good - beaches are always fun. Port Aransas is a great family beach too and a little closer.

For 10 hours - you could probably make the Florida panhandle too.

San Antonio has lots of fun stuff for kids as well.

Too hot to go to Big Bend right now.
Was just down in Rockport, which I like, and there's a lot to do there...but if you're willing to commit 10 hours there are better places to go.

I'd go to New Mexico. Do a big drive to Carlsbad the first day, see the caverns, then go up to Taos/Santa Fe. Hang out there for a week or so--there's a TON of things to do--then go back the same way, maybe stopping in Balmorhea SP for a day's relaxation in the spring fed pool. If your kids are into Cars (the movie) there will be some Route 66 stuff they might find appealing around Albuqueque as well.

Edit: Just to be clear, when I was that age I LOVED our trips out west; the pine scents, the hiking, the mountains. Loved it. The scenery is take-your-breath-away that kids really get it.

I happen to know you can get to Madison, MS in that time(550 miles); but, other than family, I can't think of a reason to 'vacation' there.(No offense to my wife's folks...they know what I'm talkin' 'bout)

It's amazing just how long you CAN drive and still stay in TEXAS!

Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands, NM - Awesome! But it's about 12 hr drive depending on how fast you drive.

Hot Springs, AR - Went there last year with my 5, 7, 9 yr old. Not so much fun. They have duck boat rides. The tower was neat and the wax museum was so not worth the money. Neat town but really not much for kids.

We are actually planning a trip with the kids the summer and we are doing, in order, Blue Bell Creamery tour, Houston Childrens Museum, Space Center Houston, Natural Bridge Caverns.
