I know, that probably seems like a strange question. So let me explain...

I recently purchased a home in Austin and when I arrived there to do some work this morning, there was a police car parked nearby. Ten minutes later, two more had arrived. They didn't have their lights on, but they did stay for about an hour. I would have gone over and talked to them, but I myself was busy talking with a contractor.

So I was just wondering: is there a simple way to find out what was going on there?

Try this: www.krimelabb.com

One can type in their zip, and the site will provide the types of incidents, addresses and dates. Good luck. Hopefully your neighbor's a policeman, and he was just having friends over.

You can also file a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

You can file one but oftentimes you will get back information that has been blackened out with one big sharpie and you wind up with nothing at all anyway. But, hey, you might get lucky. If it were me I'd call the station and ask if you can talk to someone about your question.

Thanks for the suggestions.

No luck on either Krimelabb or ci.austin.tx.us... I'm guessing it may take a day or two to show up?

Pick up the phone and call the police. Tell them you need to speak to someone in Crime Analysis. Give them the exact address in question and the date and they'll be able to see what was up. If it was something important there will be a report; if not, there will still be a log of the incident in the computer.
