I have been transferred to the Austin Area of the company I currently work for and I can't be any happier

I will be temporarily around E. Anderson Lame and The 290 and naturally, I have some questions and would be extremely grateful if some of you could help me.

First off, I am a 36 year old single male and am super excited about the music scene in Austin, I have been playing in bands since forever, and and a pretty laid back kind of guy. So here it goes.

1. Google says it's 10 minutes to downtown, 14 minutes in traffic, is this anywhere close to accurate? I hear the 35 is brutal at certain times.

2. Is this area generally safe?

3. Is there any character to the area, it looks a tad bland to me on google street view, just road a few buildings and apartment complexes here and there.

4. Is there anything close by (not including downtown) that I need to check out, go see and experience?

5. What is the overall "vibe" of the area?

And thank you guys for the welcoming feeling I have been getting from you Austinites over the past couple of months, the city already feels great to me

I do live in the zip code, though not the area you are referencing.

1.Yes and yes, I-35 can be brutal.
2. Yes, we have two spots at I-35 and St. John's were workers gather (some people are intimidated).
3. Very middle-class, some neighborhoods nice, others bland.
4. Hmm..there is, but it's probably not in 78752.
5. You're in Austin.

Any updates on 78752? Still seems like a fairly dreary place. I hear the post office may be going away?

Why isn't there any commercial in here? an italian restaurant? deli? bar?

Well, I think that technically Highland Mall is in 78752! It will be completely re-done with street level retail and residential as well as a huge center for Austin Community College. There is also a farmer's market on the weekends there.

Italian restaurant?! Ha! you are in Texas, Italian restaurants are scarce!

But there is Arpeggios which has excellent pizza as well as Mediterranean food. Most restaurants in Lincoln Village have gone out of business due to high rents but the entire complex has been bought by a CA firm and will also be complete over-hauled. There is Black Star Bewing Coop at the Crestview station. Plus all the dining just minutes away down Airport (Quality Seafood, Kome, House Pizza, etc).

Frankly, I think that the Highland neighborhood and 78752 offer about the only real opportunity to see tremendous appreciation in home values over the 10-20 years. The very best deals are already gone, 5 years ago homes were selling for 100K.

Plus you are not chained to the zip code, Burnet Road, downtown, Hyde Park, even Soco and the Domain are a quick drive.

I too think the Highland Mall - Airport Blvd area will undergo a vast improvement in the years to come. It probably won't even be recognizable as there will be tree-lined sidewalks, apartments, ACC campus, rail, retail etc.
