Me and a friend were having a discussion the other night. We pretty much agreed that Austin offers very little in terms of viable upscale nightlife and pretty much caters to the college/hipster/bohemian/starving artist crowd.

But, I want to be proven wrong. So if there is any place you know of, please let it be known!

Have you and your friend been anywhere besides 6th St and/or Red River St? Not all bars in Austin are dive bars. There are upscale lounges and bars in Downtown Austin, particularly in the Warehouse District along 2nd, 4th, and 5th St. Qua and The Phoenix come to mind immediately.

Try Six Lounge (on 4th and Colorado) and the Hangar Lounge (across from Six). Also head west on 4th, you'll pass Qua on the way (not my favorite). On the corner of Lavaca and 4th will be 219 West, best mojitos in town. Take a left on Lavaca and then head to the Gingerman. Delight in the large selection of high quality brews. Go down to 2nd, take a right and head over to Maleverdes.

Make your way back the way you came, but this time be on the other side of 4th street, go into Fado's Irish pub for a bit, then the bar right next door serves old style drinks, I can't remember its name but they are good. Now find a cab and stumble back to your place.

Stay away from 6th St, both east or west.

Without a doubt, the most high-end club right now is Roial on 5th street. I was there last Friday night and over 20 tables were doing bottle service. Very unusual for Austin and has the feel of a rooftop club in Mexico City.

Very, very nice club.

The W has a pretty high end bar scene.

Malverde has a higher end feel.

Qua, as already mentioned, is pretty high end.

I understand why East but why stay away from West 6th? Is it too much like Dallas?

It's pretty sad when the most upscale "lounge" in your city as a chain of hotels, but in Austin, that is unfortunately the case. The W hotel is, in my opinion, the most high-end night spot in Austin, and even that's not saying much.

It's one of the reasons (among many) why I can't wait to get back to Dallas, where upscale nightlife abounds. Whether you're downtown, Uptown, Oaklawn, Victory Park, Upper/Lower Greenville, Knox Henderson, North Dallas, Addison, or even North Oak Cliff, there's always many, many classy places to hang out.

The joys of civilization.

I think the Highball on Lamar has a bit of swank and is a definite scene. Weeknights the music is rather good too.
