This question is for a fellow poster who is desperatly trying to find somewhere that is "accepting" of his wife who is heavily tattooed.

From what i've been reading about Austin may be a better choice then Birmingham AL?

Anyone have any insight to this so I can forward all responses to this person, they did sound pretty desperate.

Apparently ppl discriminate against him and especially his wife because she is as he put it "fully sleeved".

What, are they yakuza or something?

Man, plenty of folks in south austin with huge amounts of tattoos.

Send them here, they won't have any problems at all... other than tattoo afficianados stopping them constantly to admire their ink.

There are a lot of tattoos around here, that is for sure, but no, I don't think that is what people are referring to when they say 'artsy'. Anyway, tattoos are pretty much the norm for a significant segment of the population. Most hourly or service industry, or completely 'local' professional work, is probably way above average in accepting tattoos. Note that I say above average, since there are some places that will have problems, same as anywhere else. As for the professional, white collar jobs with national or international scope, there will potentially be issues there, since you may have to deal with people from all over and managment may be a little sensitive to the impression it gives people from 'elsewhere'.

That was funny. There are so many people in Texas with tattoos, it's crazy. Even in little ole Lake Jackson, near where my bestest friend lives there are quite a few body art fans (she's one of them)

OMG, I can definitely respond to this!
We were just at the pool this past Sat and my husband said he's never seen so many tattoo'd people in one town. We are also both tattoo'd and we feel VERY comfy here when there are in full view at the pool. I love looking around at everyone's body art.

Austin is the most tattooed city in the U.S. and possibly the world(baring the Maori(sp?)). 4 Universities and everybody gets one. I have worked at several fortune 100 companies and every single one has had people with full sleeves. Facial tattoos are looked down on and you will have a hard time getting a job(as you have branded yourself an idiot). Here it is viewed in much the same way as rec. marijuana use...you will never reach the top but nobody really cares about it.

As equus007 said, Austin is heavily tattooed.

When Playboy did a college girl search a few years ago, they commented (on the record) that they found the most beautiful, but most-tattooed, girls in the country here in Austin. I concur. I used to work with models and it was easy to find gorgeous women but very difficult to find any who didn't have tattoos.

Specific response to mouseinthehouse: No, tattoos are not the reason that Austin is considered by many people to be "artsy." But artists and people with tattoos probably tend to congregate in the same places. I've never seen any sociological studies proving this but it makes sense to me intuitively. And it doesn't necessarily bode well for the quality of the "art" produced by those artsy adults.
