I would've followed him and left a nice friendly note on his windshield.

Interestingly, (not to offend all you intelligent people out there who happen to smoke, but..) there seems to be a link with cigarette addiction and a lack of common sense. I mean who in their right mind would willingly suck in burning carcinogenic chemicals into their lungs in the first place....?? Most people would go out of their way to AVOID getting cancer.... cig smokers actually spend their hard-earned money to GET cancer....! not to mention pollute everyone else's air.....
So to see these same folks throwing their stupid butts out the window (since they think the entire world is their ashtray).. in the middle of a catastrophic drought and when their whole state in on fire.. is no big surprise, sadly.

Thanks,

I'd like to see citations for this sort of thing. I'd like to be able to report an incident and have public safety send a strongly worded letter to the registered owner (of the vehicle).

I'd like police to clamp down - via heavy fines - for this type of behavior. I can't believe that the powers that be haven't done so. I might think twice about having that loose chain or throwing that butt out the window if it's gonna cost me $500 or more.

And just a word a caution...sounds like we've all had that "collective sigh of relief". However, this ain't over 'till we get rain...and more than a sprinkle. Please, I beg...be careful. Have an evac plan. Donate what you can to the victims and especially the first responders. And please, lets all have some patience while local government tries to get things done for their citizens. This event is a logistical nightmare for your officials.

Oh, and someone actually called in to the Todd and Don Show last week and claimed that manufacturers have made cigarettes "fire safe" and therefore, they no longer cause fires.

BTW, they are now designed to extinguish more quickly, but obviously they still burn if you can smoke them.

Hhmm.... too bad they didn't think of that a century ago, before smokers caused caused the deaths of many thousands of people, and probably billions of $$$ in property damage, destroyed priceless buildings, historic documents, antiques, etc.. and countless acres of land, & immeasurable amounts of wildlife, etc etc... with their carelessness.....

Wrong answer...and I'm sure her ears are still ringing.

Good for you! At least you took action! We all need to more involved with what is going on around us.

Yes, people can be such stupid jerks! You would think people would have enough sense to patrol their ownselves, but obviously not. I think they should call a special session and pass some emergency measures to handle incidents like this. Make it mandatory across the state high dollar fines if you're caught throwing out a cigarette out or doing other actions that could start a fire. They could run TV ads regarding this, plaster it all over billboards, put it on the marquees along with the message they have running about drinking and driving and going to jail. I really think something like this would help. Texas needs to get tough on this fire business and in short order too! People's lives and homes are depending on it!

In the conditions we're in, exactly how quick is quick? They make it sound good, but we're in a tinderbox situation here.

Driving on 183 they have those big TXDOT signs and they say "Extreme Wilfire Danger" and "Watch for smoke on the road". Wouldn't it be great if they said "Don't throw cigarette butts" and "No loose chains". I agree- if people can't police themselves, we need to have a serious awareness campaign. Anyone besides me old enough to remember Smokey the Bear? "Only you can prevent forest fires!".
