From the article:

Quote:
"We've been working with local officials to find the most appropriate location (for this press conference)," Castle told reporters. "By the time we were able to get the location finalized and certain that this would be it, it would have taken the governor longer, and we did not want to hold up the press conference."
I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt on this. It's a big friggin' deal when dignitaries travel with security and entourages. Folks in Bastrop don't need a press conference, they need their fires to be out.

IMO, if he held a presser, people would gripe that he was doing it to take credit for solving the problem.

Well,, I respectfully disagree... he is governor of TX FIRST and he seems to have forgotten that in his grab for the presidency. He should have been there throughout this whole crisis and supported his people.....!! But I guess his own house wasn't burning, so it wasn't a priority....

IIRC, he appeared at a Bastrop news conference last week right after he flew in from cutting out of his campaign.

Had he announced that he wasn't coming is one thing, but just didn't show up without good explanation while so many people waited is something else.

I am by no means a Perry supporter, but there were a lot of fires in Austin, and all throughout Texas, and if she showed up to them all, that would be showboating and it would keep people from getting the real help that they need.

I would much rather him go to the capitol and work on getting those people that help.

Afterward, Perry's press secretary Allison Castle was peppered with questions by media and residents. Logistical issues and a late change in the location were factors in the governor's absence, Castle said
I can't understand how the change in location could have been significant. It's not like the fire moved somewhere else.

He already made one visit to Bastrop, there probably are more important things he should be doing, but it was extremely rude for him to commit to the walk thru and then not show up.

BASTROP, Texas (KXAN) - Gov. Rick Perry canceled a walkthrough of destroyed Bastrop neighborhoods Saturday afternoon and then was a no-show at a press conference where residents and media waited for his arrival.

He didn't need to show up. But he should not announce the press conference and then just didn't show up while so many people waited. That is very arrogant and rude! He also wasted many local officials valuable time that they could have used to manage the disaster or rest which they probably needed really bad.

I agree, Gov. Perry didn't need to show up for the event; but, he did commit. And Bastrop city and county officials probably wasted tens of man hours of taxpayer money, coordinating planning logistics in preparation for his arrival and press conference.

Bad optics, particularly for a front-runner president candidate, whose political views are increasingly seen as 'polarizing' to the general electorate.

On a purely political level, Gov. Perry could use more 'positive' mainstream press.
